Kewbies Participant Illness and Injury Policy
Purpose
To ensure that Kew East Basketball Club provides appropriate support to participants in the Kewbies program with health care needs.
Objective
To explain to the Kewbies participants, parents, carers and coaches the processes and procedures in place to support students with health care needs during the Kewbies program.
Scope
This policy applies to:
· All coaches, including permanent, casual and volunteer coaches or KEBC administration staff
· All participants in the Kewbies program
Policy
This policy applies during the period in which a participant is undertaking basketball training as part of the Kewbies Program at Kew East Primary School.
If a participant experiences any of the following incidents during the program, a parent or guardian listed on the enrolment form will be contacted and asked to collect their child immediately. A member of the KEBC team will remain with the child in the gymnasium until they are collected. These incidents include:
Vomiting
Nosebleed
Loss of consciousness (being knocked out)
Suspected broken bone
Severe asthma attack
Feeling generally unwell to the extent that the participant cannot continue to take part in the program
Any other condition deemed significant by the KEBC team
Minor incidents will be managed onsite by the KEBC team and will not require parent or guardian notification.
For example: If a participant experiences a nosebleed during this time, appropriate first aid assistance will be provided immediately. If the bleeding stops, no further action will be taken. If the nosebleed cannot be stopped, a parent or guardian listed on the enrolment form will be contacted and asked to collect their child from the Kewbies Program as soon as possible. A member of the KEBC team will remain with the child in the gymnasium until they are collected.
Communication
This policy will be communicated to the KEBC community in the following ways:
· Handed to all regular and casual Kewbies coaches prior to them commencing their first session
· Available on the KEBC Website
· Discussed at the KEBC Committee when appropriate
· Included in enrolment packs
· Email copy available upon request
Note: As a preventative measure participants who are sick should not attend Kewbies until they are free of illness.
